Description

Use for: Goldenseal is used for infectious and inflammatory conditions of upper respiratory, digestive and genitourinary tracts. It is also used for common cold, nasal congestion, allergic rhinitis, colitis, diarrhea, constipation, swine flu, haemorrhoids, post-partum haemorrhage, fever, pneumonia and whopping cough.

Concerns: Goldenseal is mostly safe in appropriate doses for short-term. Adverse effects may include gastrointestinal upset, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal distension, bitter taste, headache and flatulence.

Goldenseal may increase the bilirubin level on lab test, and may affect the bleeding disorder, hypotension, hyperbilirubinemia, diabetes and surgery. Discontinue Goldenseal 2 weeks before the scheduled surgery. Consult with health care provider on use of Goldenseal for those medical conditions. Avoid using on pregnancy and lactation.
