Description
Beta Carotene is a fat-soluble compound that is used for erythoropoietic protoporphyria, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), sunburn, heart disease and cataracts. It is also used for decreasing symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and improving cognitive function. Some people use this for prevention of osteoarthritis and improvement of muscle strength.
Concerns: It could be safely tolerated when used in appropriate dose. However, beta-carotene would be related to lung and prostate cancer risks and cardiovascular mortality risks in smokers and people with a history of asbestos exposure.
There is insufficient data of using high dose of beta carotene on pregnancy and lactation. Consult with health care provider on consideration of using beta carotene.
