Description
Garlic extracts are commercially available in various forms such as dried and freeze-dried powder, steam-distilled oil, tincture, macerated extract (aged garlic extract), odorless macerate, liquid or powdered extract and enteric-coated capsules.
Use for: Garlic is used for hypertension, hyperlipidemia, prevention of cancer, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), cystic fibrosis, Helicobacter pylori infection, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, athletic performance and exercise-induced muscle soreness.
Concerns: Raw garlic or garlic oil may irritate the digestive system so should be recommended to be taken with meals. It also may increase the risk of bleeding and may have interactions with anticoagulants/antiplatelets and fish oil. Garlic also may decrease the blood pressure so may have additive effects on blood pressure control with antihypertensive medications.
