Description
Use for: Folic acid is a water-soluble B complex vitamin and is necessary for normal erythropoiesis and nucleoprotein synthesis after conversion to tetrahydrofolic acid. It is used for megaloblastic anemias from folic acid deficiency, and the prevention and treatment of all other folic acid deficiency cases.
Folic acid is also used for hyperhomocysteinemia, methotrexate toxicity, prevention of neural tube defects and vascular disease, cognitive impairment and depression.
Concerns: Folic acid is generally well tolerated in appropriate dose. Higher than recommended dose can cause adverse events such as irritability, altered sleep pattern, confusion and neuropathy.
Some medications such as phenytoin, isoniazid, barbiturates, methotrexate, trimethoprim and triamterene may cause folic acid deficiency. It is recommended to take folic acid supplements when taking those medications.
Consult with health care provider on consideration of using folic acid 1mg.
