Goldenseal;

Use for: Goldenseal is used for infectious and inflammatory conditions of upper respiratory, digestive and genitourinary tracts. It is also used for common cold, nasal congestion, allergic rhinitis, colitis, diarrhea, constipation, swine flu, haemorrhoids, post-partum haemorrhage, fever, pneumonia and whopping cough.

Concerns: Goldenseal is mostly safe in appropriate doses for short-term. Adverse effects may include gastrointestinal upset, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal distension, bitter taste, headache and flatulence.

Goldenseal may increase the bilirubin level on lab test, and may affect the bleeding disorder, hypotension, hyperbilirubinemia, diabetes and surgery. Discontinue Goldenseal 2 weeks before the scheduled surgery. Consult with health care provider on use of Goldenseal for those medical conditions. Avoid using on pregnancy and lactation.

Echinacea;

Use for: Echinacea has been used for prevention of the common cold and treating infection with a little evidence but it was thought to reduce infection by stimulating the immune system. Immune system related efficacy is not known but antiviral effect of Echinacea may have shown the beneficial effect on prevention of common cold or related symptom relief with a little evidence for now. Other effects of Echinacea would include antibacterial effects, antifungal effects, anti-inflammatory effects, antioxidant effects, antiviral effects, immunologic effects and wound-healing effects.

Prevention and efficacy for COVID-19 are unknown with antiviral or immunologic effects related assumption with little evidence. It is also used for the adjunctive treatment of common infectious processes of viral or bacterial origin.

Concerns: Echinacea should not be taken by individuals with auto-immune disorders (eg. HIV, Rheumatoid arthritis), tuberculosis, leukocytosis and multiple sclerosis. Do not use Echinacea on pregnancy and lactation. For the individuals with those diseases should consult with their physicians for the use of Echinacea.
